Depositphotos 55583559 xsThrough the proposed STSM ‘New Speakers as Workers Across Time and Space’, I will undertake a research stay at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) from 23 October 2014 to 6 November 2014 to collaborate and exchange with Professor Alexandre Duchêne and his team at the Institute of Multilingualism.

Over the course of the mission, I will present both COST Action IS1306 and my PhD research on ‘new speakerness’ in the contemporary Irish workplace to the PhD seminar Alexandre has organised for postgraduate students at the University of Fribourg. I will also present the ‘New Speakers’ network and my own research to a Masters-level course taught by Alexandre on the theme of ‘Language and Society’.

Additionally, I will accompany Alexandre on a fieldwork trip to one of his local research sites related to his own investigations of ‘new speakers’ as workers, which will give me the opportunity to observe his research methods and to explore the concept of ‘new speakers’ on another terrain. To conclude the STSM, I will participate in the colloquium organised by the Institute of Multilingualism on the ‘History of Ideas on Multilingualism’ (3-4 November 2014).

This colloquium will offer a critical, diachronic perspective of the conception of multilingualism across space and time, and will thus provide an important (and previously understudied) historical perspective on ‘new speakers’. By attending this colloquium, I will also have the opportunity to discuss COST Action IS1306’s research with the international scholars on multilingualism who will be attending as invited speakers.
