Galway Meeting

Working Groups Meeting

Thursday 24 & Friday 25 September 2015

Location: National University of Ireland, Galway

Local Organiser: Dr. John Walsh

The fourth round of Working Group meetings of our COST Action will take place at the National University of Ireland, Galway on 24-25 September 2015. The Department of Irish at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures is delighted to host this event which will be held in the iconic Quadrangle building.

At the meeting, we will present the initial work of Phase 2 of our action based on the four new Working Groups which were established following our last meeting in Vigo, Galicia:

  1. Multilingual competence and new speaker varieties
  2. Speakerness: subjectivities, trajectories and socialisation
  3. Language policy regimes, regimentation and governmentality
  4. Legitimisation and power

Read a summary of the aims of the new WGs here.

These groups are based on cross-cutting theoretical themes and conceptualisation across the three original strands (a) Indigenous minorities, (b) New speakers in the context of migration and (c) New speakers as (transnational) workers.

The Galway meeting will lay the groundwork for the final two years of the COST Action.

There will also be a public round table event on new speakers of Irish on Thursday 24 September at 4.30pm. See the link below for further information.

The National University of Ireland, Galway has a special statutory obligation towards the Irish language and up to 10 percent of its students are either studying Irish itself or through the medium of Irish. It is located close to the largest Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region) in the country.

Táimid ag súil go mór le fáilte ó chroí a chur romhaibh go hOllscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh!
